Harry Potter A-Z

A Saturday post I have been doing to spread the Harry Potter love and to take us all on a trip down memory lane :). I've been a little lazy in the last couple of weeks - been a bit busy and just haven't felt like spending any more time than was absolutely necessary on the computer meaning I'm a little behind on these posts!

T is for Thestrals
'Thestrals are huge winged horses with white shining eyes, dragonish faces and necks, and skeletal black bodies. They are attracted to the smell of blood. Thestrals are invisible to anyone who has not seen death, which means that few of the students in Hagrid's Care of Magical Creatures classes could see them during Harry's fifth year. They are amazingly magical animals, however. People used to think they were bad omens, that seeing them meant bad luck, but this is just superstition. Thestrals have an amazing sense of direction and move magically fast through the air. Dumbledore used them to travel if he didn't care to Apparate (which probably explains how he got to the Ministry and maybe even how Hagrid got to the Hut on the Rock by flying.'

REVIEW: The Queen of Dreams - Peter Hamilton

The Queen of Dreams - Peter Hamilton
The Queen of Dreams
Taggie and Jemima are summer holidaying on their dad's farm, when they see a white squirrel wearing glasses . . . and soon after their father is captured and trapped in a faerie world that's fallen to Darkness.

But why would anybody want to kidnap boring old Dad, especially the dreaded King of Night? Could it be that their family isn't quite as ordinary as they believed?

REVIEW: My Cousin Rachel - Daphne du Maurier

My Cousin Rachel - Daphne du Maurier
My Cousin Rachel
My Cousin Rachel is the gripping story of a Victorian young man whose placid life in the English countryside is turned inside-out by an older woman. The young man is Philip Ashley, the novel's narrator. Orphaned at an early age, he's been raised by his bachelor uncle Ambrose, who falls in love and marries while travelling in Florence, then dies there in suspicious circumstances. Shortly after her husband's death, Ambrose's widow turns up in England, setting the stage for the unfolding of a relationship between the callow Philip and the beautiful, sophisticated, mysterious widow. And while Philip impetuously embraces the role of the moth flapping full-tilt toward the flame, the widow never puts a foot wrong. Is she designedly luring Philip to his doom? Might she even have had a hand in Ambrose's death?

REVIEW: Model Misfit - Holly Smale

Model Misfit - Holly Smale
Model Misfit (Geek Girl #2)
My name is Harriet Manners, and I am still a geek.”

Harriet knows that modelling won’t transform you. She knows that being as uniquely odd as a polar bear isn’t necessarily a bad thing (even in a rainforest). And that the average person eats a ton of food a year, though her pregnant stepmother is doing her best to beat this.

What Harriet doesn’t know is where she’s going to fit in once the new baby arrives.

With summer plans ruined, modelling in Japan seems the perfect chance to get as far away from home as possible. But nothing can prepare Harriet for the craziness of Tokyo, her competitive model flatmates and her errant grandmother’s ‘chaperoning’. Or seeing gorgeous Nick everywhere she goes.

Because, this time, Harriet knows what a broken heart feels like.

Can geek girl find her place on the other side of the world or is Harriet lost for good?

REVIEW: Antigoddess - Kendare Blake

Antigoddess - Kendare Blake
Antigoddess (Goddess War, #1)
Old Gods never die…

Or so Athena thought. But then the feathers started sprouting beneath her skin, invading her lungs like a strange cancer, and Hermes showed up with a fever eating away his flesh. So much for living a quiet eternity in perpetual health.

Desperately seeking the cause of their slow, miserable deaths, Athena and Hermes travel the world, gathering allies and discovering enemies both new and old. Their search leads them to Cassandra—an ordinary girl who was once an extraordinary prophetess, protected and loved by a god.

These days, Cassandra doesn’t involve herself in the business of gods—in fact, she doesn’t even know they exist. But she could be the key in a war that is only just beginning.

Because Hera, the queen of the gods, has aligned herself with other of the ancient Olympians, who are killing off rivals in an attempt to prolong their own lives. But these anti-gods have become corrupted in their desperation to survive, horrific caricatures of their former glory. Athena will need every advantage she can get, because immortals don’t just flicker out.

Every one of them dies in their own way. Some choke on feathers. Others become monsters. All of them rage against their last breath.

The Goddess War is about to begin.

REVIEW: Geek Girl - Holly Smale

Geek Girl - Holly Smale
Geek Girl (Geek Girl, #1)
Harriet Manners knows a lot of things.

She knows that a cat has 32 muscles in each ear, a "jiffy" lasts 1/100th of a second, and the average person laughs 15 times per day. What she isn't quite so sure about is why nobody at school seems to like her very much. So when she's spotted by a top model agent, Harriet grabs the chance to reinvent herself. Even if it means stealing her Best Friend's dream, incurring the wrath of her arch enemy Alexa, and repeatedly humiliating herself in front of the impossibly handsome supermodel Nick. Even if it means lying to the people she loves.

As Harriet veers from one couture disaster to the next with the help of her overly enthusiastic father and her uber-geeky stalker, Toby, she begins to realise that the world of fashion doesn't seem to like her any more than the real world did.

And as her old life starts to fall apart, the question is: will Harriet be able to transform herself before she ruins everything?

SEPTEMBER Blog Recap

September hasn't been an overly busy month on Uncorked Thoughts, although I have had some incredibly exciting news! I was offered an Internship at Angry Robot Books (which I am currently doing). I was over the moon and needless to say that really hasn't changed. It is brilliant and it definitely confirms that publishing is the right career for me. It has only been a week but there has already been some priceless experiences!
Other than that, I partly participated it in the Classics Retold Challenge, although that died off a little towards the end of the month as I got a little bored of reading a variety of Alice in Wonderland retellings. I mean, I enjoyed Alice but not enough to read an entire month's worth of her!

REVIEW: Cybersexism: Sex, Gender and Power on the Internet - Laurie Penny

Cybersexism: Sex, Gender and Power on the Internet - Laurie Penny
Cybersexism: Sex, Gender and Power on the Internet
‘The Internet was supposed to be for everyone... Millions found their voices in this brave new online world; it gave unheard masses the space to speak to each other without limits, across borders, both physical and social. It was supposed to liberate us from gender. But as more and more of our daily lives migrated on line, it seemed it did matter if you were a boy or a girl.’

It's a tough time to be a woman on the internet. Over the past two generations, the political map of human relations has been redrawn by feminism and by changes in technology. Together they pose questions about the nature and organisation of society that are deeply challenging to those in power, and in both cases, the backlash is on. In this brave new world, old-style sexism is making itself felt in new and frightening ways.

In Cybersexism, Laurie Penny goes to the dark heart of the matter and asks why threats of rape and violence are being used to try to silence female voices, analyses the structure of online misogyny, and makes a case for real freedom of speech – for everyone.

Harry Potter A-Z

A Saturday post I have been doing to spread the Harry Potter love and to take us all on a trip down memory lane :).

S is for S.P.E.W
Society for the Promotion of Elvish Welfare
Founded in 1994 by Hermione Granger in response to what she saw as gross injustice in the treatment of house-elves. The Society didn't exactly catch on among Hogwarts students, but she persevered. Eventually she started knitting hats and socks which she left lying around Gryffindor tower, hoping to free some unsuspecting elf who picked them up while cleaning the common room. Once the elves discovered the hidden garments, they were deeply offended and refused to clean Gryffindor Tower anymore. Dobby picked up the slack, doing all the cleaning himself.

September Author of the Month

Author of the month is a little post that I've started doing to celebrate one of the authors of the books I've read this month. September's author of the month is:

Caitlin Moran
I read her book How to be a Woman this month and just absolutely loved it. She is incredibly witty, honest and just brilliant to read. I couldn't get enough of that book and am browsing the shops for Moranthology! She managed to put all of my thoughts about feminism into such a clear way that will appeal to everybody, love it!

Exciting News & Slow Blogging

A quick post to let you all know what's going on at the moment here at Uncorked Thoughts! I've been soooo unbelievably lucky and am currently doing an Internship at Angry Robot Books! I've just finished my second day there and it is so brilliant. I'm loving being a Robot! It's everything that I dreamt the job would be and I'm learning so much about the publishing world. It's definitely solidified my choice in career which is AWESOME.

It does mean, however, that I am going to be really slow on the comment front this week while I settle in in Nottingham and learn my way around. It's really exciting! Bare with me guys, I will get back to you :).
