REVIEW: 'Lover at Last' - J. R. Ward

Lover at Last - J. R. Ward
Lover At Last (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #11)
Qhuinn, son of no one, is used to being on his own. Disavowed from his bloodline, shunned by the aristocracy, he has finally found an identity as one of the most brutal fighters in the war against the Lessening Society. But his life is not complete. Even as the prospect of having a family of his own seems to be within reach, he is empty on the inside, his heart given to another....

Blay, after years of unrequited love, has moved on from his feelings for Qhuinn. And it’s about time: The male has found his perfect match in a Chosen female, and they are going to have a young—just as Qhuinn has always wanted for himself. It’s hard to see the new couple together, but building your life around a pipe dream is just a heartbreak waiting to happen. As he’s learned firsthand.

Fate seems to have taken these vampire soldiers in different directions... but as the battle over the race’s throne intensifies, and new players on the scene in Caldwell create mortal danger for the Brotherhood, Qhuinn finally learns the true definition of courage, and two hearts who are meant to be together... finally become one.

The End.

Bah. I don't even know where to begin. So, so many feels. I, like every other BDB fan, have been eagerly awaiting the story of Blay and Qhuinn and WOW did she deliver! I have never felt so emotionally wrung out after reading a book. There was anticipation, frustrating, sadness, love, happiness all rolled into one massive ball which just bulldosered me FLAT. Agh, how long until the next book, Ms. Ward?! It's a book jam packed with twists and turns keeping me gripping onto the book in anticipation. I found myself wondering how on earth would these two soldiers end up together? Will they ever get their happily ever after?

There are a few storylines running alongside the main plot (the development of the relationship between Blay and Qhuinn) in which we find out the dire situation of Trez and iAm, the struggles of Xcor and the Band of Bastards and the interesting new twist developing with the character of Assail. These were all left unfinished, with the story line developing between Assail and Sola leaving me wanting more! What happens?! Agghhhh. Since this book picked up where Lover Reborn finished, we are confronted with the tactics developing within the Brotherhood to prevent any further assassination attempts against Wrath, the King. It's interesting to see the twists and turns this journey takes, especially with the conflict now arisen with Xcor, the assassin. His attempt at dethroning Wrath is given another complication. He has fallen hard and heavy for Layla, The Chosen who is now baring the child of Qhuinn. Gawd it's like a soap opera!

Qhuinn and Blay however dominate the narrative. It's frustrating viewing the situation from both males points of view and it just makes you want to scream at them to STOP with the macho blah blah and the 'oh-he-doesn't-want-me-'cause-he's-*insert reason here*'. GOD, I thought I was going to explode. It seemed like this couple was never meant to be and agh was it heart breaking. J. R. Ward handled the issue of homosexuality so well within this book, and has done all throughout the series. We see Blay coming to terms with it much easier than Qhuinn, and the euphoria caused through the acceptance of his sexuality by his parents. Qhuinn however, is on the other end of the spectrum. Ever since he was young, he has always been seen as an outcast due to his mismatched eye colour. The glymera could never accept anything less than perfect. Due to this and his outcasting from family, we see his struggle - despite the death of his parents - in accepting that he is considered 'imperfect' in more ways than one. Honestly, I thought I was going to explode from sadness.

It's such a beautifully written book and I highly recommend it to everyone ever. If you have yet to read ANY of this series, what are you waiting for? I promise you will absolutely LOVE it.
